Endocrinology

The endocrine system is responsible for the production of hormones. These hormones are responsible for regulating multiple vital functions of the body at all levels: reproduction, behavior, fluid and food intake, etc.

Although endocrine diseases tend to be more frequent in elderly animals, this is not always the case and it’s important to be attentive to the appearance of symptoms.

Some of the most common endocrine diseases are:

 – Hypothyroidism, which normally affects dogs and is caused by a lack of thyroid hormones.

 – Hyperthyroidism that more frequently affects cats and is caused by an excess secretion of thyroid hormones.

 – Diabetes mellitus, which affects both dogs and cats and produces an abnormality in the production of insulin and therefore in the levels of carbohydrates in the body.

 – Acromegaly, which is an excess of growth hormone, which mainly affects cats.

 – Diseases of the adrenal glands, such as Cushing or Addison’s syndrome, which mainly affects dogs, hyperaldosteronism in cats or hyperadrenocorticism in ferrets.

Symptoms in these pathologies, in many cases, are nonspecific or not very visible in the first stages, so it’s very important to have experience and the appropriate resources to facilitate diagnoses.

We have our own lab to measure certain hormones, and for more complete profiles, we work with the best reference labs, with results in less than 24 hours in most cases.

In our endocrinology clinic in El Puerto de Santa Maria, we will evaluate each case individually to assure what medical and / or surgical treatment is best suited for your pet’s health.
